The Spanish call this event as the “Encierro”. They lock up all the streets and leave only one channel open in which a dozen of bulls are set free and people run in front of them. This event is believed to take place during the Sanfermines or the feast of the San Fermin which is held in the town during that time. This festival is officially held somewhere around noon time on the 6th of July each year.

About the event

The event starts with a lot of noise making which is also known as the “Chupinazo”. The mayor in this place signals the start of the event and then the Sanfermine officially begins. There are lots of firecrackers which are burst and people all over the town celebrate the joy and the triumph. There is happiness spread all across the city. This marks the beginning of the festival and you can see the happiness and the fiestas all over the place.

What happens in the festival

The festival known more popularly as the “Bull Run” by the tourists, starts as early as possible on the wee hours of the morning of the 7th July. This festival continues for a week, till almost the 14th of July. The Run is said to begin at the bull pens in Santo Domingo and runs through the bull rings on the streets. Here, they have to face the fierce and the famous matadors. It is said that the distance among these two places is about eight hundred and twenty five meters and the run is completed within three minutes. This route is said to have been designed in such a way that the people can get through over the walls of this place but not the bulls!

At around eight “o” clock the spirit and the happiness of the festival starts diminishing a bit and tension and anxiety takes its course and the people start wondering the result of the race in anticipation. The gates of the place where the people are standing are opened at around eight sharp and the people start praying for their lives. The second blow signals the break free of the bulls.  This is known to be one of the weirdest marathons in the world. The people run on the streets like crazy in order to stay alive for the next day. The adrenalin rush makes the people go insane and everyone wants to put up with their best front here. People are dressed in varied colors and carry either a red handkerchief or tie it around their necks. This is a sight which is ideally not to be missed. The entire run here is pretty difficult as there are many climbs and cliffs here. This makes the run more interesting and adventurous. The race finally ends with the bulls entering their pens on the stadium where the Bullfight ideally takes place. The bulls have their own charm and grace with the nerdy matadors hitting against one on one with the crazy bulls.

Only the brave ones have the heart and the courage to enter this race and they are cheered by their companions steadily. These people who stand on the other side of the fence act as a safety defense for the runners who try to cross over the fence if the bull attacks them. The race is completely gruesome and some of them also end up getting hurt and bruised, yet this game is one of its own sort. This is the way the Spaniards enjoy their life and their cherished festival and makes it the most interesting and the most amazing one and a sight of great tourist interest.
